In the United States two types of music fall into public domain:

  • Any music works published in 1924 or earlier

  • Any works placed in the public domain previously

In most other countries, music generally enters the public domain 50 to 75 years after the original composer’s death. But this is a nuanced issue and we encourage you to do your own due diligence when considering the use of works in the public domain.

We are not currently soliciting compositions of works in the public domain for our library. Please do not include compositions inspired by or that include substantial similarities to compositions in the public domain.
